NEW YORK, N.Y. - For the third time in four weeks the Seton Hall women's soccer team is represented on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll as freshman Frankie Maier (Oradell, N.J.) received the honor for the first time in her young career this afternoon after factoring greatly into a double-overtime victory over Marist last Wednesday.
Maier played a central role in both of the Pirates' goals on the night, helping SHU erase an early 1-0 deficit and conclude non-conference play unbeaten at home for the third consecutive season.
After the Red Foxes jumped ahead just 75 minutes into the action, Maier was part of a furious SHU charge to level the score. Off a corner kick from the right side in the 19th minute, she played the ball in to Ashley Clarke (Paramus, N.J.) who quickly returned it to Maier. The freshman then sent a dangerous ball screaming towards net that Katie Ritter (Hagerstown, Md.) was able to get her head on and guide over the goal line to tie the game at 1-1.
The assist was the first that Maier recorded in a Seton Hall uniform but not the last that she would collect before the night was over.
After 80-plus scoreless minutes following Ritter's strike, the two teams found themselves in double-overtime searching for a winner. The ultimate break-through came off another combination from Clarke and Maier as the two midfielders again orchestrated the sequence that led to a goal, this time with sophomore Alexis Urbanski (Aberdeen, N.J.) playing the part of finisher.
Clarke sent a pass in Maier's direction that found her in space on the right wing. Maier gathered, dribbled forward and delivered a well-weighted ball into the center of the area; allowing Urbanski to run onto it and send the Pirates home winners with a headed goal of her own.
Maier's two assists increased her season point total to four, matching the third-most on the squad this year. She becomes the second SHU player to land on the Weekly Honor Roll in 2013 after goalkeeper Jennifer Pettigrew (Kearny, N.J.) was selected in two of the last three weeks.
The Hall will return to action this Thursday, September 26 when they open BIG EAST play against Providence at Owen T. Carroll Field. Start-time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
