LOS ANGELES -- Texas native and Seton Hall signee Eva Gonzalez (Mesquite, Texas) is poised to step onto the international stage yet again as she has been called into the Mexico U-20 side that will participate in the 2015 U-20 Women's NTC Invitational to be hosted by U.S. Soccer at the National Training Center in Carson, Calif. next week.
The round-robin tournament will include Japan and Brazil in addition to Mexico and the United States. The schedule pits each of these premier sides against one another over a span of five days (June 2 - 6). The winner of the tournament will be determined by total points accrual with the primary tiebreakers being goal differential, followed by total goals scored.
All six matches can be viewed live via web stream on ussoccer.com.
The event will double as a showcase and challenge for the four teams as they begin gearing up for the 2016 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup to be held in Papau New Guinea. For CONCACAF nations such as Mexico and the United States, the qualifying tournament will be held in December in Honduras.
One of 20 players called in to the side for the NTC Invitational, Gonzalez is no stranger to representing Mexico at the highest level of international competition. A breakout star for the U17 squad during a historic undefeated run at the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup, Gonzalez followed up that title-winning performance by helping Mexico advance to the quarterfinals of the 2014 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in Costa Rica.
Nicknamed "Mouse," Gonzalez is coming off a prep campaign in which she led Bishop Lynch to Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) Division I state title this spring, scoring the opening goal in a 2-1 win over an Ursuline side that had won 24-straight state titles. As a senior, she racked up over 40 assists and 60 points and is part of an incoming class that currently stands at 10 and is set to join the program for its second year under head coach Rick Stainton.
Upon the announcement of the class, Stainton lauded the creative abilities that Gonzalez will add for the Pirates next season, saying, "Eva is a very dynamic, creative presence at the center midfield position. She is an excellent distributor of the ball and will help orchestrate the attack. She obviously comes in with a long list of accomplishments but more importantly, she's someone who is driven to improve and contribute."
