3/31/2019 9:32:00 PM | Women's Golf
EDISTO ISLAND, S.C. – Sophomore Mia Kness (Venetia, Pa.) fired a Seton Hall single-round record, 67, as the Seton Hall women's golf team surged up the leader board to fourth place after two rounds at the Edisto Island Invitational on Sunday.
Kness used five birdies and 12 pars to compile one of the greatest rounds in program history, a 4-under-par, 67, in round two. Her second round performance sets a new Seton Hall single-round record for a par-71 round. It also ties Ali Kruse's single-round record of 4-under-par for any par course. The Pirate legend shot a 68 in the third round of the par-72 Cincinnati Spring Invitational on March 23, 2014.
Kness opened the tournament with a 4-over-par, 75, this morning. She is currently tied for eighth place among 86 individual golfers with an even-par, 75-67-142. Kness trails the individual leader, Delaware's Thitaree Sakulbunpanich by eight strokes with 18 holes to go. She is seeking her second straight individual title, having won the William & Mary Intercollegiate only two weeks ago.
The record-setting round wasn't only for Kness, but the Pirates as a team as well. In today's second round, The Hall fired a 6-under-par, 278, to move up one spot in the team standings to fourth place entering Monday's final round. It is the first time in Seton Hall history that the Pirates have registered a team round under par. Today's 6-under, represents an obliteration of the prior even-par record.
The Hall had a strong first round as well, a 13-over-par, 296. For the tournament, the Pirates are 7-over-par with a 297-278-575. They trail the team leaders, North Florida, by five strokes entering Monday's final round. BIG EAST rival Xavier is currently in second place, four strokes ahead of The Hall. Delaware is third at 6-over-par.
Following the lead of her teammate, junior Lizzie Win (Sylvania, Ohio) also had a career-best performance in today's second round. Win had four birdies and 13 pars in route to a 3-under-par, 68. Like Kness, she too shot a 4-over-par, 75, in round one. Through 36 holes, Win is tied for 13th place with a 1-over-par, 75-68-143.
Junior Carolina Ronchel Salas (Huelva, Spain) and freshman Sarah Fouratt (Santa Maria, Calif.) are also separated by only a stroke through two rounds. Ronchel Salas was brilliant in the opening round, using five birdies to fuel a 1-over-par, 72. In round two, she had three more birdies in route to a 4-over-par, 75. For the tournament, she is tied for 21st place at 5-over-par with a 72-75-147.
Fouratt was a third Pirate to shoot a 4-over-par, 75, in round one, but also improved in round two. The freshman used three birdies to shoot a 2-over-par, 73, in round two. Currently, she is just one stroke behind Ronchel Salas and is tied for 26th place with a 6-over-par, 75-73-128.
Junior Maddie Sager (Phoenixville, Pa.) improved nine strokes to fire a 1-under-par, 70, in round two. Sager used 14 pars and three birdies to fuel her strong round. For the tournament, she is tied for 29th place with a 7-over-par, 79-70-149.
Competing as an individual, junior Sammie Staudt (Coatesville, Pa.) was consistent on Sunday. She fired a pair of 6-over-par, 77's. Staudt is currently tied for 43rd place with a 12-over-par, 77-77-154.
Tournament Details:
EDISTO ISLAND INVITATIONAL
Host: Charleston Southern University
Location: Edisto Island, S.C.
Course: Plantation Course at Edisto
Course Vitals: Par-71, 5,902 yards
Dates: March 31-April 1, 2019, Three Rounds
The Course:
The golf course started as a dream of David Lybrand's in 1971 when he purchased the 300 acre site and set to develop a golf course, of which he knew little about. He assembled a team of locals, each with their own specialty, and began construction. Many challenges were addressed in constructing over 30 acres of lakes, and planning around the beautiful trees.
They employed architect Tom Jackson to complete the final phase. He did a masterful job of blending greens and traps which matched the terrain and beauty of the site.
The course was originally named 'Oristo', and the grand opening in late 1973 featured a helicopter landing on the course bringing Sam Snead, Bob Goalby, and Chuck Matlock to play the first round. The Pros were complimentary of the course and so were many golfers who would long enjoy Edisto's new facility. Soon after opening, Oristo received recognition from several sources as one of the best new courses in the Carolina's.
The Field:
In addition to Seton Hall and host Charleston Southern, the field is comprised of 14 other teams including: Bethune Cookman, The Citadel, College of Charleston, College of Charleston (White), Delaware, Elon, James Madison, Morehead State, North Florida, Presbyterian, USC Upstate, Western Carolina, William & Mary and BIG EAST foe Xavier.
Tee Times:
The field will play two rounds (36 holes) on Sunday, beginning with a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m., and a single final round on Monday. Seton Hall will be paired with golfers from Bethune Cookman and Xavier for the first two rounds.
