South Orange, N.J. -- The Seton Hall women's soccer team shutout La Salle in the second half but a goal with 15 minutes to play in the first half put the Explorers ahead for good as they defeated the Pirates, 1-0, at Owen T. Carroll Field on Thursday evening.
How It Happened
Both sides were even early as both were playing their first games of the season. The first shot and shot on target came nearly five minutes into the contest and it was saved by senior Grace Gordon (Chester Springs, Pa.), making her 29th appearance between the pipes for the Pirates.
La Salle continued to control the pace in the latter half of the first when they found the back of the net at the 30:24 mark. Junior Maille McDermott (Nashua, N.H.) was perhaps the most active Pirate in the first as she produced a shot that went over top in the 38th minute and created a chance with a shot on goal with two minutes to play before the halftime whistle.
The Hall held its own in a physical second half where freshman Maddy DeCola (Mahopac, N.Y.) had a shot that was saved in the 55th minute and senior Naomi Welch (Livingston, Scotland) had her best chance of the night to score off of a free kick taken by junior Brina Micheels (Plattsburgh, N.Y.).
