Kitzinger Tallies In Pirates' Loss To Lafayette

South Orange, N.J. — Freshman Adria Kitzinger (Ridley Park, Pa.) tallied her first career in the season opener for the Seton Hall women's soccer team but Lafayette proved to be too much in a 4-1 victory at Owen T. Carroll Field on Friday evening.
Kitzinger was assisted on the goal by junior Chiara Pucci (Munich, Germany) and sophomore Abby Hall (Brookfield, Wis.). The Pirates were able to tally and keep it a two-score game late in the match despite being down two team captains and veterans in junior forward Natalie Tavana (Middletown, Conn.) and senior midfielder Maille McDermott (Nashua, N.H.) due to injury.
How It Happened
After conceding an early goal to the Leopards just over seven minutes into the contest, the Pirates picked up the pace and generated more chances in the attacking third while matching Lafayette's physicality. The Hall found a spark from the bench as juniors Caroline Lipton (Alexandria, Va.) and Phoebe Hampson (Cheshire, England) came on and provided quickness to the midfield.
Arguably the Pirates' best chances of the first half came via a long distance strike by Hampson that was saved and Lipton followed with a volley that was also stopped by Lafayette's keeper. Despite the change in momentum, the Leopards doubled their tally off a corner kick to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Following Lafayette's third tally of the contest, the Pirates answered shortly after and kept within distance of the Leopards. Hall stepped up to take a free kick just past midfield and she sent the ball into the box. It found the feet of Pucci first before landing near Kitzinger, who put enough of a strike behind the ball to give the Pirates its first goal of the 2023 season.
