Hooper scores her sixth career goal on Sunday
QUEENS, N.Y. – Despite an early goal by senior Laura Hooper (Watford, England) and a staunch defensive effort against one of the top scoring teams in the BIG EAST, the Seton Hall women's soccer team couldn't get past St. John's as the Pirates fell in overtime, 2-1.
Sophomore Grace Gordon (Chester Springs, Pa.) registered three saves and sophomore center back Abbie Roberts (Bedfordshire, England) kept backline organized as the Pirates (1-2, 0-2 BIG EAST) held the Red Storm to one goal through 95-plus minutes.
With just over 15 minutes into the match, the Pirates pushed the ball into their attacking half and a foul was drawn. Roberts and Hooper both stepped up to take the free kick but it was Hooper who sent the ball to the back of the net from 35-yards out, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
St. John's was able to knot up the score at 1-1 on a long strike of their own just before halftime but, in the second half, Gordon and the Seton Hall defense staved off a potent St. John's attack that had scored 11 goals in their previous four games. Their efforts wouldn't be enough though as the Red Storm were able to score the game-winning goal in overtime.
Notes
- The goal in the 29th minute was Hooper's sixth of her career and her first in a Seton Hall uniform.
- Along with her strong play on defense, Roberts also registered a shot off of a free kick.
- Sophomore Julia Aronov (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) also tallied a shot, her first at Seton Hall.
- Gordon, Roberts and senior Dani Brinckman (Glastonbury, Conn.) played the full 96 minutes.
